Antonin Lavergne est un écrivain et instituteur français. Né dans le Cantal, il exerce comme instituteur en milieu rural avant de se consacrer à l’écriture. Son roman Jean Coste ou l’Instituteur de village, publié dans les Cahiers de la quinzaine en 1901, connaît un grand retentissement. Ce récit poignant dépeint la misère matérielle et morale d’un instituteur de campagne, soulevant la question de la condition enseignante. Péguy, qui préface l’ouvrage, y voit une illustration de la misère qu’il combat. Le livre contribue au débat sur la laïcité et l’école républicaine.

Antonin Lavergne was a French writer and schoolteacher. Born in the Cantal, he worked as a teacher in rural areas before devoting himself to writing. His novel Jean Coste, or the Village Schoolmaster, published in the Cahiers de la quinzaine in 1901, had a great impact. This poignant narrative depicts the material and moral misery of a rural schoolteacher, raising the question of teachers’ conditions. Péguy, who wrote the preface, saw in it an illustration of the destitution he fought against. The book contributed to the debate on secularism and the republican school.
