Jean-Christophe. IV. La révolte. 1. Sables mouvants

IV — THE REVOLT — 1
CAHIERS DE LA QUINZAINE, appearing sixteen times a year, PARIS, 8, rue de la Sorbonne, ground floor.
Note from the manager. — From this short index it follows that Jean-Christophe presently consists of four books:
The first book, Dawn, formed the ninth cahier of the fifth series; marked two francs, this cahier now sells for three francs fifty;
The second book, Morning, formed the tenth cahier of the fifth series; marked two francs, this cahier now sells for three francs fifty;
The third book, The Adolescent, formed the eighth cahier of the sixth series; marked three francs fifty, this cahier now sells for three francs fifty;
We have today only a small number of these three cahiers and those persons who do not yet have them would do well to request them from us immediately; these three cahiers will not be reprinted; as soon as they are on the way to being out of print, which cannot be much longer now, we shall raise their price to twelve francs each until they are entirely out of print; from the day they are completely exhausted, they shall no longer be sold except in our complete collections of our fifth and sixth series, until these series themselves come to be on the way to being out of print and then are completely exhausted. Then they will necessarily no longer be sold at all.
From the day these three cahiers are raised to the out-of-print price, we shall no longer sell for ordinary use anything but copies of the Ollendorff edition.
The fourth book, The Revolt, consists of three parts which respectively form three cahiers.
First part of this fourth book: Quicksand; this is the present cahier, fourth cahier of the eighth series, a white cahier of more than 144 pages, marked three francs;
Second part of this fourth book: The Quicksand; a cahier to appear in this eighth series, which will be marked three francs;
Third part of this fourth book: Deliverance; a cahier to appear in this eighth series, which will be marked three francs;
Thus to obtain all that has appeared of Jean-Christophe before the publication of the present cahier, namely the three previous cahiers forming the three first books, it suffices to send a money order of ten francs fifty to M. Andre Bourgeois, administrator of the cahiers, 8, rue de la Sorbonne, ground floor, Paris, fifth arrondissement. One will receive by return mail the three cahiers indicated above.
To obtain the first four books of Jean-Christophe, it suffices to send a money order of nineteen francs fifty to M. Andre Bourgeois, same title, same address. One will receive by return mail: the three cahiers indicated above forming the three first books; the present cahier forming the first part of the fourth book; and one will receive on the day itself of their publication: the two other cahiers forming the two other parts of this fourth book.
The manager Charles Peguy
At the threshold of a new series in the story of Jean-Christophe, whose character of somewhat sharp criticism will very often risk offending in turn readers of all parties, I beg my friends and those of Jean-Christophe never to take our judgments as definitive. Each of our thoughts is only a moment of our life. What good would it do us to live, if not to correct our errors, overcome our prejudices, and broaden from day to day our thought and our heart? Patience! Grant us credit if we are mistaken. We know that we are mistaken. When we recognize our errors, we shall condemn them more harshly than you. Each day, we strive to reach a little more truth. When we have reached the end, you shall judge what our effort was worth. As an old proverb says, “the end praises the life, and the evening the day.”
