Émile Vandervelde est un homme politique et théoricien socialiste belge. Docteur en droit et en sciences sociales, il devient député socialiste en 1894 et président de la Deuxième Internationale de 1900 à 1918. Figure majeure du socialisme européen, il défend un socialisme réformiste et démocratique. Il contribue aux Cahiers de la quinzaine sur les questions sociales et le mouvement ouvrier international. Plusieurs fois ministre en Belgique, il œuvre pour la législation sociale et la Société des Nations. Son ouvrage Le Socialisme contre l’État (1918) expose sa vision d’un socialisme humaniste.

Émile Vandervelde was a Belgian politician and socialist theorist. A doctor of law and social sciences, he became a socialist deputy in 1894 and president of the Second International from 1900 to 1918. A major figure in European socialism, he defended a reformist and democratic socialism. He contributed to the Cahiers de la quinzaine on social questions and the international workers’ movement. Several times a minister in Belgium, he worked for social legislation and the League of Nations. His work Socialism Against the State (1918) expounds his vision of a humanist socialism.
