A work assembled across cahiers
Jean-Christophe
1904–1912
Romain Rolland’s roman-fleuve, ten volumes long, ran in the Cahiers de la Quinzaine from 1904 to 1912. Following the German-born composer Jean-Christophe Krafft from childhood in a Rhenish town to old age in Paris and Switzerland, the novel braids music, friendship, and European cultural politics into a single arc. It was the Cahiers’ commercial flagship and won Rolland the Nobel Prize in 1915. The installments here are reprinted in their original Quinzaine sequence.
