Mangasar Mugurditch Mangasarian was an Armenian-American free-thinker, lecturer, and rationalist polemicist. Born in 1859 in Marsovan, in Ottoman Anatolia, into the Armenian Protestant community, he emigrated to the United States, took a divinity degree at Princeton, and served briefly as a Presbyterian pastor before breaking with Christian orthodoxy. He went on to lead the Society for Ethical Culture in Philadelphia and then the Independent Religious Society in Chicago, where for more than thirty years his Sunday addresses at Orchestra Hall were one of the public faces of American free-thought. His books — The Truth About Jesus: Is He a Myth?, The Bible Unveiled, A New Catechism — argued for a secular ethics in plain, oratorical prose. The World Without God, which Péguy issued as Quinzaine V-11 (1904), is the only one of his works to have appeared in French in his lifetime; Péguy thought enough of it to preface it with a thirty-seven-page Avertissement of his own — one of the longest editorial introductions he ever wrote for another author. Mangasarian retired in 1925 and died in Los Angeles in 1943.

Mangasar Mugurditch Mangasarian, conférencier et polémiste rationaliste arméno-américain, naît en 1859 à Marsovan, en Anatolie ottomane, dans la communauté protestante arménienne. Émigré aux États-Unis, il passe un diplôme de théologie à Princeton, exerce brièvement comme pasteur presbytérien, puis rompt avec l’orthodoxie chrétienne. Il prend la tête de la Society for Ethical Culture de Philadelphie, puis de l’Independent Religious Society de Chicago, où pendant plus de trente ans ses conférences dominicales à l’Orchestra Hall sont l’un des visages publics de la libre-pensée américaine. Ses livres — The Truth About Jesus: Is He a Myth?, The Bible Unveiled, A New Catechism — défendent une morale laïque dans une prose claire et oratoire. Le monde sans Dieu, que Péguy publie en cahier V-11 (1904), est le seul de ses ouvrages à avoir paru en français de son vivant ; Péguy l’a jugé assez important pour le faire précéder d’un Avertissement de sa main de trente-sept pages — l’une des plus longues introductions éditoriales qu’il ait jamais écrites pour un autre auteur. Mangasarian se retire en 1925 et meurt à Los Angeles en 1943.
